In the first 30 minutes, we are introduced to the characters and get to know them a bit, how they act, who they love and the friendship they have together. It amazes me how every consequens the characters suffer is mostly because they care about eachother and the ones they love, it’s almost a clear pattern. One of the best long film sequenses I’ve seen is from Rififi, a over 20-25 minute silent sequense where the characters try to break into a vault, it’s really calm all the way but yet it doesn’t ceaze to excite for one second. This is a tone the entire film has, it’s calm but somehow exciting in many ways.

What makes me love Ocean’s Eleven is the cast that works so well together and is overall very charismatic. They feel comfortable when they are on-screen together, it’s almost like watching people have regular covnersations in real life. Whenever Brad Pitt and Clooney are on screen, it really feels like a regular real life conversation between two friends. This is held up strongly by the chemistry they have between eachother and how well written the dialogue between them is.

The tone is calm all the way through and the film never takes itself too seriously, that allowes the viewer to just sit back and enjoy the ride. Ocean’s Eleven is also visual eye candy at times, one can just get lost in all those Vegas colors and lights. A brief sequense I really liked was the conversation Rusty and Ocean had in the car a short time after they met in the film, it’s shot in medium height from behind. Though not much light or colors are shown there, I still found myself getting lost in the sequense even though it didn’t last very long.

The fun dialogue fits well into the film and is handeld well by the cast, it managed to make me atleast smile in most of the scenes. It’s very enjoyable seeing a film like this, a film that’s never forced and like I mention above very calm. But what amazes me is how it all just goes so well together, the dialogue, the calm tone and the characters. Overall, I’d say it’s a film that feels natural all the way through.

Supernatural is held up alot by the casting of the two main characters, Sam and Dean. Jensen and Jared seem so natural when they are on-screen together. Dean balances the humor in a way that prevents Supernatural from being a humorless show, he is simply one of my favourite characters of all time. He showed time to time how much he cares about his brother Sam and he never stopped to amuse me.

In the first season of Supernatural we get to know the main characters Sam and Dean more and more as the season goes on. As that happens, Sam and Dean become more and more likeable and interesting characters. It’s just perfectly paced throughout, the bakground story on the brothers made me as the viewer to constantly want them to meet up with their father. It felt like this was what it was building up to, and it does not dissappoint. We got a tensed finish to the season, the last two episodes really manage to show how much this family wants to get the yellow-eyed demon and how they will not stop at any cost.

It seems that every episode of this show is important for the future of the season, as it teaches us more and more about the characters and effects heavily on the season plot. Examples of this are Mystery Spot (Season three) and It’s a Terrible Life (Season four). In Mystery Spot we get to see Sam show just how far he’ll go for his brother and it turns out that it develops to madness. In It’s a Terrible Life, we are shown what destiny means in this show and how you can’t escape from it. It’s really hopeless for Dean and Sam to even dream about a “normal life” since this is their destiny. It’s a lesson Dean learned after It’s a Terrible Life, Sam on the other hand learned it after the death of his girlfriend.

Supernatural is a exciting and fun journey throughout all 4 seasons, it just improves and improves as it goes on. Misha Collins performance as Castiel is for me the best thing ever from the show, the convincing look Castiel has in his eyes as he struggles against feelings is somewhat creepy

Observe & Report is unlike most comedies I’ve seen, it’s just different. I guess one could say that it is pretty unique it its own way. The film really doesn’t have much tension, which kind of surprised me since I was expecting a tense and violent comedy. This is however nothing negative, I liked it this way. Observe & Report is mostly a very calm film with hilarious, disturbing and at the same time sad moments. An exception is the main character Ronnie fighting all those cops, the film builds up well to the emotional downfall of Ronnie. The emotional downfall is shown in a hilarious and tense way from the start, but then it gets more and more disturbing as we see it develop. It’s quite interesting how I was laughing one moment and just two seconds later I’m feeling sorry for the character I was just laughing at. Almost as I felt bad for laughing, even though I was supposed too.

I don’t think I’ve seen Seth Rogen act this good before, this was definetly his most challenging role and he was the perfect man for it. He managed to make me laugh at some scenes that really were just disturbing, like beating a kids head with a skateboard while he’s escaping. Just seeing such a serious character do that in slow mo is.. well, it’s funny, disturbing but funny.

I’m surprised Observe & Report got made, but I’m glad it did. It constantly challenges itself on making disturbing and sad moments very funny, it mostly succeds. My favourite part from the film would definetly be Ronnie chasing a nude and disgusting guy in slow motion, while “Where is My Mind” by the Pixies is playing in the bakground. In the end, we get a happy ending, was it real or was it to show how stupid people can be? I do not know, it was hilarious though.

Director Martin Scorsese examines his two main characters and their personal issues very well, but at the same time he also shows us what was happening in the city of New York at that point of time. I never felt like Scorsese was more interested in any of them, he balanced it in a way that makes the entire film feel important. The problem I had with Gangs of New York is that it could drag alot in the begining, I had a hard time not yawning through the first 30 minutes. But after those 30 minutes, it truly takes off and uses the plot to create a certain tension. This tension is there everytime Amsterdam and Bill are together on screen, I truly felt Amsterdams isolation and his lust for vengeance. This tension is also held up by the fact that Bill the Butcher is a unpredictable character that created a certain fear inside of me.

Daniel Day Lewis plays Bill the Butcher in a flawless way, as he puts fear into the viewer he also manages to entertain via dark humor. A perfect example of this is when he’s crying for the dead rabbit and at the same time telling Mulraney to find who ever killed this poor animal. Leonardo Dicaprio’s performance isn’t anything remarkable but it’s not bad either, my only problem with the cast was Cameron Diaz. She felt nervous and unreal every single second she was on screen. Which was the reason for me getting out of some scenes and simply “not feeling it”.

Scorsese’s stylish vengeance tale can drag at times and is held down a little by one awful performance from Diaz. Aside from that, it’s tense and has one extremly interesting character Bill the Butcher, that makes it alot better then what it is. I found the enviorment quite stunning and rich which awakend my interest in what was happening in the bakground. As it ends with New York evolving through time, it made me think about how all that’s left of us in the end is the story we tell.

I’ve always wonderd what it’s like to see a film that has such a huge impression on you that it doesn’t leave your mind for a second, I’ve heard people talk about experiences like this but yet I couldn’t imagine what it would be like. After seeing Mann’s latest film, I finally know. Public Enemies was the film that had this impression on me, it’s a very stylish look at a important part of history. It almost felt like a play made just for me, though what makes it distant from a play is the score and how it struck through my heart every single time it was on. It sounds sad but in a way almost hopeful. It fits the scenes in a perfect way, sort of like another favourite of mine The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). As the film went on and the score played, I felt that it gave me the chance to really feel what was happening. This is a very rare thing for me, I can’t say I have seen many films that have felt this real. Mann’s choice to film it in digital was a big part of this, as it added a more realistic view.

Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger as good as I expected, it’s a often charismatic performance that prevents the film from being a gangster flick without any sense of humor. Christian Bale plays the man who is out to arrest John Dilligner, Melvin Purvis. Bale wasn’t given much to do because his character simply wasn’t interesting enough. Mann makes sure that the audience knows that Purvis only has his work for a living which is enough. The romance between Dillinger and Billie Frechette (played by Cotillard) is not well developed and often mysterious. That’s what made it great for me, the mystery in it and how the film kept making me wonder why Dillinger loved her so much. It was as if he saw hope in her eyes, she was someone that made him happy by only being there with him. Billie Frenchette was also something that kept Dillinger from being a similar person to Purvis. Without her, all Dillinger has to care about is what he does for a living.

Public Enemies is filmed in a artistic way, a tense shootout in the woods in the middle of the night filmed in digital turned out to be one of the mos intense action sequenses I’ve ever seen. What should one focus on during this? The beautiful nature in the bakground or the exciting and intense shootout. I personally felt most of both, I admired the cinematography that made me feel warm inside and I also admired the tense shootout that kept me excited. It was a unique feeling for sure and definetly my favourite part from the film.

Aside from looking stunning, being exciting, having great performances and a beautiful score, Public Enemies is also a very interesting film about history and media. It does a good job of showing how the media glorifies John Dillinger and how the public follow with it. It’s also a interesting take on how the law was followed and handeld in America back then. This is all shown with a different style and as I mentioned earlier, it almost feels like a play. Almost.

There is no doubt in my mind that Public Enemies is one of the finest films I’ve ever seen, the impression it had on me is extremly rare. Johnny Depp’s performance is one of my favourites from the 00′s and it’s a performance I will enjoy for many times to come. I will always value the feelings I had during Public Enemies and the experience itself is something I will never forget.

While the Director’s cut of Watchmen is better then the theatrical, it still isn’t a huge improvment, it is a minor one though. It has some key scenes like Hollis Mason’s death, a scene that got to me as the viewer alot and was handeld better then I thought it would be. Watchmen is a interesting film for sure, it’s well paced and has a great soundtrack. It explores vigilanties, the thrill they have for what they do and their beliefs in justice. Laurie and Dan’s angle is very well shown and it should be pretty obvious that they were in it for the thrill, it gave them excitment and something to live for. Rorschach followed what he believed in and his vision of justice to the end, which some people find heroic. It all depends on who’s watching Rorschach really, do I think he’s a hero? No I don’t. In my opinion, Rorschach is the definition of anti-hero.

While Watchmen has alot of potential in it and is just screaming on the edge of becoming truly a great film. The bad acting by most of the cast prevents it, Åkerman, Gugino, Wisdon and even Patrick Wilson really brought it down and felt shaky. The acting from these four was simply not believable at all, it prevents the film from being truly great. Aside from that, it’s still enjoyable to a certain amount. David Earle Haley is perfect as Rorschach and his voice works perfectly fine. He delivers the lines with great “badassery”.

My favourite part is definetly the long Dr. Manhattan sequense, when we get to know how he transformed into this amazing creature. The calm voice helped me to absorb what was being shown on screen, it just struck to my heart and I knew I was watching something special. This is a very rare thing, not many sequenses or scenes have made me feel this way. The entire sequense is given the perfect amount of time and doesn’t force anything on the viewer.

All in all, Watchmen is a enjoyable and interesting film held down by it’s acting and it has my favourite moment of the year so far (Dr Manhattan sequense). Even though it feels slow and cheezy at times, it still makes up for its flaws via its tremendous hights. An interesting view on violence, thrill, morals and justice.

The Aviator is Martin Scorsese’s best looking film to date, he clearly had fun making it and made the colors of the film change as the time in the film advances. In this three hour film we follow Howard Hughes (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) the women in his life and his work. As we go on we see Howard beating the odds over and over again, as he beats the odds we don’t see a big deal made out of it in the film. No moments that try to force us feel happy for him, the film is calm almost all the time, we can react as our feelings allow us to react on Howards achivments. The only time the tension goes up is when Howard has his accident, no music is played during this accident and it’s shot in a effective way. It’s not melodramatic and as always in the film, it allows us to feel many things about it. The differance between this scene and other “big scenes” in the film is that this one is more tense (as I mentioned earlier) and as the tension goes up I couldn’t help but feel stressed and heartbroken for Hughes.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Howard Hughes in a charismatic way but yet sometimes disturbing and stressfull. Which is what I wanted before going into the film. It’s a performance that deserves more praise if you ask me, he nails every line and managed to get me close to his character, even though I do not relate to Hughes in any way. Cate Blanchett’s intentionally over the top performance always manages to make me smile, she has fun with the character she is given and takes it to the next level. Cate always wants to challenge herself and she didn’t make an exception while playing Katharine Hepburn.

The colors, the performances and Scorsese’s simple way to show scenes that others would exaggerate amaze me. The music always seems to fit perfectly to the scenes it is played. The Aviator is a colorful three hour ride that entertained me, thrilled me and made me sad. I would not change a single scene of it and I would with no doubt in my mind say that it is one of my favourite Scorsese films. If that’s not enough, this rewatch also made it one of my favourite films from the 00′s.
